The Real Reasons I Blog

1. To ward off dementia.

2. Stay in touch with my roots. No such thing as overworking with Koreans. Rest? Psh. That’s what the grave is for.

3. You’ve saved me money on therapy. I didn’t have to go this year.

4. I don’t want to clean. Who in their right mind would choose mopping and dusting over THIS?

5. It’s my one rightful obsession. I don’t drink, smoke, go on shopping sprees, or get pedicures. You gotta give me sOmething.

6. I can be as anal as I want and people like me for it. Go figure.

7. I’m repressed. Parents didn’t let me stay out at night. I get to party ’round the clock as the comments roll in.

8. I hand out advice on stuff: blogging, life, men and women. And all these people think I’m for real.

9. It’s my only chance at keeping up with technology. I’m terrified to tweet, annoyed with Facebook, have yet to go near an iPod, hate texting.

10. I haven’t had this much fun since…since…
*Slump* Pathetic. (Time for my next pick-me-up post.)

  1. Very solid and fun reasons, I might be a computer tech. I never have really touched a tablet nor do I text, because they are expensive.

    1. Well, where living requires my hands-on presence, I’m taking advantage of the break with our homeschool group this month.

But to answer the ques another way, I have never felt so alive in just this way as I have these 21 months.

    2. As a time nazi, I also write and plan a lot of the posts midstream during the day – off the blog. This might leave you thinking that doesn’t really let me LIVE but I decided it beats the hours (and hours) I spent in the kitchen before the blog.

Besides, it’s how I met you all. Can you blame me?

      =)

All this applies to me very much, Elizabeth, as well as quite a few other things you mentioned. This post really speaks to me! 🙂

  2. A lot of your reasons I think I could have come up with as my reasons too! I find this quite amazing. Thank you for your honesty. Keep enjoying your blogging! You say:
“No such thing as overworking with Koreans. Rest? Psh.”
Maybe I too often aim at doing a bit of extra work. However I found out that at my age (80!) it does not work so well with me anymore. Whether I like it or not, I have to take frequent rests and overall have to slow down a lot. We learn as we get older and “wiser”. Ha,ha

  3. “8. I hand out advice on stuff: blogging, life, men and women. And all these people think I’m for real.”

    Say what??? Woman???

When I was 13 years old the 100m sprinter Ben Johnson tested positive for steroids at the Seoul Olympics and that was the first time one of my heroes let me down. Today when I read number 8 on your list was the second time…

How could you??? I knew I shouldn’t have spent all that time making a shrine to you in my spare room… I’m going to destroy it right this very moment…

ps – I’ll take a photo of it first, just in case.

  4. I’m right there on most of these! To a degree all of them!* No iPods, just a modern smartphone (for this comment). If only I had people I would want to text with, and not relatives I’ve never been in touch with…

    *Pathetic.

  5. Rock on, blogging goddess, rock on.

I am technology illiterate, but am very adept at things like EBay, craigslist, etc. Goes to show you excel at what interests you!

    Love,
    E

  6. Good reasons all. For me, no matter the intent, the effect seems to be to amuse a few people I have never actually met and to piss off some relatives who tend to take everything personally. Also good reasons in my opinion.

  7. OK. 2, 3, 4, 5…..and possibly 9(I am a computer science graduate, go figure:p) and 10. We have a LOT in common D. Also another huge reason for me is that I think I am finally doing something productive. I think.

    1. ” I am finally doing something productive. I think.”

LOL You THINK? You THINK twice? Real-blogger material KNOWS. Reach farther into the Force within.

(If you’re having trouble, I’ll tell you. Your stuff is good. You’re being productive.)

      1. LOL. Honestly, I know I am doing something productive. But I just can’t get over whether that’s just in my head or is it something others see as well. Ok that barely made any sense. But since you also agree then I should just zip it. Right? 😀

  8. Brilliant post, D. Love the humour. I agreed with every. Single. One. “…I get to party ’round the clock as the comments roll in.” That made me laugh and I can relate to this in some way. There is nothing like generating a discussion, touching and connecting others with your words 🙂

  9. I truly love how raw and real your blog is… You truly are an inspiration in so many ways!

I truly relate to your work ethic… Thanks for your motivation and inspiration!

I have nominated you for the Very Inspiring Blogger Award!

  10. Sooooo many good reasons to blog! Did you also find that blogging gives you more and/or other things back than you perhaps had expected when you started? Anyway, I’m glad I found you out there, and I think that what you say here speaks to many of us! Have a great weekend!

  11. I love reading about why we blog. Everyone has their reasons. Reaching out and finding that we’re so very much the same in many ways builds connections with others that would wouldn’t have before. There is an intimacy in blogging that just isn’t available in real life, even with close friends and family. Thank you for blogging, my friend 🙂

    1. And “finding that we’re so very much the same in many ways” has been startling – and healing – hasn’t it, Paul? That yours has turned out to be more than a recovery blog, not that that is in any way deficient.

      Love,
      D.

    2. By the same token, it’s been moving, fascinating, enlightening, and humbling to read of your journey and note the common threads. It’s just how we cope with our own demons. We are all struggling. So inspirational, how you’ve turned things around. I think the running caps it. =)

  12. Great list, similar to my own!

“He captures memories because if he forgets them, it’s as though they didn’t happen.”
― Donald Miller, A Million Miles in a Thousand Years: What I Learned While Editing My Life

      1. No prob! There was also a recent thriller released in theaters this past Halloween titled “Before I Go To Sleep” that explored that topic as well. I haven’t seen it, though I almost did.

Part of why I started my blog was to re-stimulate memory association connections in my brain that were damaged years ago when I underwent ECT at my request as a last resort to treat suicidal ideations and to actually purge myself of some of my memories! Sounds like something from a movie, but my life is not actually that interesting – clever writing hides that fact!

I’m stronger now, and have recovered a lot of what I lost, and it is less haunting. My blog truly does partly function as a form of free therapy for me, and as a sort of memory tree to help me trace back my roots!

  13. I love all your very valid reasons Diana! Your ‘therapy’ is very insightful and helpful to many here, so in essence you also give therapy (you may want to add this on your list 🙂 ) I would never have believed that you are technologically challenged, I thought you are superwoman? 🙂 Wishing you a very happy holiday season to you and yours. xo

    1. “I thought you are superwoman?” Now you know. Ha ha ha. As to the season’s greetings, same to you and yours, dear Deb. I’m grateful you’ve walked this journey through with me, and hope you reach higher ground in the publishing landscape as well as the places of the heart in the coming year.

      D.
