I Would Gather All The Words

If I could I would gather all the words
from the wild, pick them like berries
and press them into these pages to
bleed them, beautiful, into my notebook

I would chase syllable streams that
refresh dry banks and stop. at the quarry
where I will cut confused hands on stone,
going through the   ruins of my
dreams and I will bottle my cries to
pour over the altar of my art

If I could I would answer the laughter
in the wind, unravel the rhetoric of the rain,
and walking dirt and gravel transcribe
    the vernacular of city streets

I would record every note of joy from children
and undo the silence of grandmothers,
    ask them   about dogged hope

I would keep on west of my despair,
right through the dying sun and spell
the sunrise as it lights land and sea
    in the genius of resurrection.

  1. Oh I absolutely loved this – especially “If I could I would answer the laughter
in the wind, unravel the rhetoric of the rain,
and walking dirt and gravel transcribe
the vernacular of city streets” – such amazing metaphors!

  2. I love to hike. So this poem took me on a journey to view the beauty of words, to experience refreshment by following the path of anticipation and exercising the freedom to explore words. Thank you!

  3. My two cents in the HT?

    Well D,

Its far more than two scents………………and I’ll even throw in a colour, but I’m not tellin ya 😉

Nice work here, came from a very nice place.

  4. A veritable feast of poetic plum pudding set to satisfy the hunger pangs of a famished soul long seeking the sustenance of his mighty muse. Either an ancient Polish way of saying “I like it loads”, or, I just made it up, and it means the same. Seriously though, it was beautiful.

  5. Beautiful poem, D. You really got a good way with words. Love how you ended with a sunrise – a new day, a new beginning, a time to start over or a time to start 🙂

    • Thank you, FA. Interesting, in light of your lovely feedback, how God was said to have created the world (give life) by the Living Word which symbolizes Jesus and His power. Appreciate the faithful read. Have a wonderful wknd.

      • The same to you and your family, Diana. It is my favorite day of the year. My most most recent blog post explains the alternate reality in which I have dwelt these past months. We do walk in that resurrection life, don’t we? And so grateful for it!

  6. Diana you are at your peak here, such expression in those words I wish I could bottle them in a jar and open them every now and again, set them free. To remind me what a perfect piece of poetry reads like.

  7. Heartfelt and pure ~ the way writing and poetry is meant to be.
There are great lines, followed by great lines, and creating a poem that will never grow old. It started with “…press them into these pages to bleed them, beautiful, into my notebook” and then it flowed even stronger. Beautiful.

    • You’re out for the VIP Reader trophy, aren’t you? =) But no, you would pass even if it were yours for the taking and take unadulterated pleasure in the encouraging. Have to say I love the feedback, R. Thank you.

      • I’d simply have to say I’m not worthy ~ as there is so much yet for me to say (and learn from you & your readers!). Cheers to a glorious weekend for you ~

  8. I’m just blown-away with the beauty and majesty of this poem! It is beyond beautifully written. It is one of those rare creations which are so perfect one believes it arrived in this world full-blown as if the words had existed in just that particular way for endless eons !!!!!!! I LOVE IT !!!!
