We Dream Again

What is it about the year-end that makes us face our fears and disappointments, and count our hopes again like pieces of treasure in our palm? The seasons herald change as they fold into one another, but the calendar shows us we don’t cycle in place. We wheel forward—birthdays, anniversaries, “three years since”— all touchstones across memory and longing, markers of time that leave no one unaffected. The Eve is a live wire between the past and future and with the turn of the year, we cross a mental threshold.

For some of us it’s simple math, only so many grains of sand left in the hourglass. We seek to balance the equation, weigh our dreams against the run of time. But it’s more than a race with the clock. No matter our age or station or story, the height of the new year holds out a second chance. We hope for better, of our life and of our self, because to be human means to grow. In character, strength, achievement there is room for more and we seize fresh opportunity. So we turn our feet toward our dreams, reset our compass to the hope of our winter sun.

  1. I always enjoy your writing, Diana. You give me many ideas and thoughts to ruminate upon and I always take something away from your blog. Thank you, and Happy New Year ❤

  2. I love this post, so many truths. I was just thinking how happy I am that someone, somewhere once decided that we should celebrate the turn of a year. And I love that it has become a symbol of rebirth, providing us with a moment to redeem ourselves and make changes.

    • Such a beautiful summation of the post: “providing us with a moment to redeem ourselves and make changes.” I was saying that no one has to tell us the time is again at hand for us to seize. It is nature’s offer of the redeeming start you speak of. We are all caught up in it.

  3. Yes, another trip around the sun!
In yoga the other day, they had us do some meditating and had us pick a word for us to work on for the new year to focus on – basically the first word that popped in our heads. What would yours be?

  4. Dreams make our life colourful and happy. And the happiest moment of the life is when Dreams come true. We have to be grateful for that. It is in human nature to wait for some good changes in New Year. This is why that holiday is so magic.

  5. I love your words today, you truly have such style Diana. We take stock on what we wanted to achieve and what actually happened. Time slips through our fingers. We get to reshuffle and start again in the hope maybe this year we will get it right. It never pans out the way we think it will. But there are golden moments given and a hell of a lot of learning for all. Happy New Year to you.

  6. Lovely. You expressed the emotions and importance of this poignant, hopeful time in such a way that we all can relate to. And the writing is so beautiful. Happy New Year to you, Diana!

    • Understood and agreed, Allen. Because it is a fight I very much feel everyday.

“But we all, with unveiled face, beholding as in a mirror the glory of the Lord, are being transformed into the same image from glory to glory, just as from the Lord, the Spirit.” 2 Cor. 3:18

They go from strength to strength, till each appears before God in Zion. Ps. 84:7

  7. This is a great blog entry. Very thoughtful and provoking. I never thought of the New Year in that way but that is exactly what I was thinking of doing this year.

  8. To be semi-cynical, we deem the new year a marker that says, “I am still breathing. I made it through another year.”

I hate to rain on the parade, but our time is meanless in the grand movement of the Universe(s). But still, it is our time, and the more empathy we serve to it, the better off the time of others will be.

    • Actually, I’ve given good thought to what you say, Max. The wonder of it, how our life can both have such value and be so SMALL at the same time. Such a beautiful mystery, if one comes at it from the other side of cynicism. =) I appreciate the follow and your staying near. =)

      Diana
